LISTS for flu in 2020

Recommended Posts

As I mentioned, DH has been On Board fully with stocking up specifically for dealing with illness.  We've gone thru

1)  BOTH of us with normal flu virus with fortunately only fever-chills and 3 wks of being very weak.

2)  I went into bronchitis...normal for me

3)  oddly, we had to deal with food poisoning [self-inflicted, for petes sake] which refreshes our memory about the unpleasant aspects of THAT!

What Was All That?  Boot Camp so we could prep for COVID-19????   ......perhaps.  And we've decided to make sure our unpleasant weeks are not in vain.  Fresh in our minds..... What do we need for each thing?  [obviously some overlap]

By SYMPTOMS:

Nausea/Vomiting

Diarrhea

Fever/Chills/Weakness

Bronchitis/Coughing

By GENERAL CATEGORY:

Medications

Medical Equipment

Cleaning/Sanitation

Special Food/Drink

So I'll leave this for anyone to COPY/PASTE for your post, if this works for you.  I'll start my list below.  Obviously you may have different list categories ....so post them too!

It is a curious fact that 70% isopropyl alcohol kills germs better in general use than 91% isopropyl alcohol. The ability of lower percentage solutions to kill germs is retained until below 50%. So the question is why is 91% and 49% not good at killing germs? 91% is too much alcohol thus it evaporates very quickly not staying around long enough to kill germs. 49% is too little alcohol and too much water to kill effectively. 70% is the sweet spot: Strong enough to kill well, wet enough to last long enough to do the job. Rubbing alcohol is 70%. This is also why most jell hand “sanitizers” are about 70% alcohol.

Ambergris, DH probably knows this but I've never heard of it!!  Is 90% good for the little pop can alcohol burners?

As moderator I can endlessly edit my list.  So I'll just put a note if I add more things.  Just to give anyone ideas.

Very good for any alcohol burning device as long as it's done safely.  We invested in a couple of cases of little jars filled with alcohol and a little burner on top that you remove and light.  Bought the cases for about $3 several years ago. They';re not re-fillable though.,

Don't forget our little fishies!  Add puppy pads to your list, available at $Tree.  Lots of paper plates, glasses, cups etc., as well as plastic table ware so it can be disposed of.  Also some heavy mil clear plastic so one can seal off a room if needed...hopefully one with a window so the person inside can see the world while being isolated.  Creating a "sick room" sort of thing.  This all sounds so fearful doesn't it!

Fearful......yes.   a lot!

Yes, the fishies!!  I forgot their needs on my list.  Have some.  I found out that bronchitis can be either viral or bacterial....hmph!

I'm not even going to try to rig a 'sick room'.  This cabin is 620 sq ft.  Leaks like a sieve from inside and outside.  No way we can keep separated.

I DO hope dogs do not catch this human virus.  :(  No way to separate her either.

...need to fetch the bedside commode from storage.

Why puppy pads......same as "chucks"?   For Koa, we've got a back door that leads to a small pee yard but now the gate opens directly to the former goat yard too.  THAT was a blessing while we were too sick to take her on 'business' trips.  Just in and out and in and out of the back door.

I bought the chux type of pads. Puppy pads have some odor attracting agent in them so the puppy can sniff it out to know where to pee. I don't know if humans can smell it or not. Or if it smells stronger when wet. I wasn't going to chance it since its possible they might be used on a pillow for vomiting.

My disposable plates and cups (for a sick room) are made of paper. I got them so they can be burned. Save on trash bags, won't draw attention that I have food and more sanitary if burned right away. At least that was my thinking.

Funny you should mention the fishies. I used quite a bit of their med when they were having their bladder issues a couple of weeks ago. Since they can only use one kind, I thought I'd better order some more to have on hand for them. I went on line to the place I always go to and now you have to have a prescription from a vet for their meds. Who in the world takes fish to the vet! I searched around a little and found another place. The day after I placed the order they called me to be sure it was really me who placed the order. They said because it was a large-ish order and it was the first time I've ordered from them they needed to verify. The order came the next day. I think I ordered last Wednesday morning and they were here Friday or Saturday. They finally have doxycycline in now. It took forever for the fish world to get that in stock. I read where it you can only have one antibiotic then go for doxycycline.

Anyway, the point of that is there may come a time when we won't be able to get fish meds online. Like everything else these days...get while the gettings good.

The dollar store plastic trash cans that are about 9" high and 10" across are a godsend.  They easily hold a plastic bag or can just be cleaned and sterilized with bleach in a dishwasher.  When something goes through the house, everyone gets their own trash can to vomit in.  They are a great size to catch everything--wide enough for aim not to be an issue and just deep enough to not splash yet still be easy to clean.  They also come in several colors so I can color code which one belongs to who.  They are also great at containing all the specific items needed for 'this sickness this person' to limit cross contamination.

Do not forget to throw out toothbrushes after you are well!

Very good points, euphrasyne!  I boiled my toothbrush after this illness...cuz it was nearly new.  I've just recently realized I forgot to sanitize the water bottle I bring into town.  So now....I think...all things are sanitized so I don't re-infect myself!  I like color coded trash cans!!

These are great list. Thank you. I do need to get the stuff for the fish, Got to keep them well. I have some but may be way out of date by now. That is the next thing on list to go through. Hopefully I will get it done tomorrow. Might start on it tonight if I can muster up some engery. Right now I feel like a nap but going to head out to drug store in a bit.  Seen a couple of things on the above list I need to get. Thanks for that reminder.

My old, old, little house, too.

I'd add 2 things to the list that we all probably have.   Salt and Vaseline.   I used both with the flu recently.   Noses get raw and sore quickly;  Vaseline helps that!   I cannot have any kind of OTC cold/flu meds or even honey.  So I gargle with salt water.  :yuk:  But it helps a sore throat.   Do people still do that?  It was one of my mom's go-to home remedies when I was growing up.

Yes, salt water is quite good for that....if you don't swallow it.  :yuk: indeed!

I'm sitting here thinking....what BILLS would we have to continue to pay if we went into mandated quarantine?  DH no longer going to work...for a time.

This is what I'll be adding to the list up top:

Rent is a question cuz this is a personal contract between us and owners who are out of state.  It wouldn't be a matter of not eventually paying them the back rent......as long as the BIG HOOEY didn't hit the fan.  It would be a matter of immediacy.  They would not be evicting us during a pandemic quarantine.

Internet is our only source of data except ground line phone.  Data and communications would be vital for emotional survival and for planning.  DH and I calculated that it will be at least 2 more months before we could go without the furnace [propane and electric] without freezing us and the water pipes and all our goods that contain moisture.  Even the pellet stove requires electricity....and bags/bags/bags of pellets.  :0327:  The same time period would require snow removal.

***Now is NOT the time to lose one's medical coverage....  :grinning-smiley-044:

Lots of bills can be paid on-line.  Or over the phone.  As long as you pay THOSE bills.  Would the U.S. postal service be able to continue?  Some folks already mentioned gloves for postal carriers.

****Anyone deciding to pay ahead on house/house insurance or something else?

*****WILL THE SENIORS AMONG US RECEIVE OUR SOC. SECURITY MONEY INTO OUR BANK ACCOUNTS?

  that the banking, postal, and Federal offices can keep such systems running.

Got back from Walgreens.  This is what I got and now they are out of some of it because they only had 2 of each on some things.

Mattress protectors  Charity brand was all they had in the extra large on sale buy one get one free. Got both. So that gives me 60 of those.

Vitamins  D3, milk thistle,  Vit. C,  the 81 mg asprin, and Q10. We take these on a regular bases and they were buy one get one free. The Vit. C was buy a two pack and get a two pack free.

DH's cream that he uses on his arms were buy one get one 1/2 price. So got 2 of those.

Bought more  emetrol, pepto bismol another box of elderberry pills, Mucinex, Nyquil, both day and night. I have some of the night time but only a 1/2 bottle left.  Also bought the Pulse Oximeter. Ouch they are not cheap. But did get $15.00 off on the sale they were having.

I am hoping we are set for whatever happens and hoping this virus does not get much worse than it is.

Also got extra gloves and only 2 boxes left also on sale. So everything I got was on sale. :hapydancsmil:Saved a lot of money that way. I usually shop Walgreen twice a year and it has been over 8 months for our vitamins. So figured now was the time before any panic sets in with people around here. Better now than when this mess hits. Don't want to be out with the crowd.

Joyfilled, the last thing you want to do is panic. That is the worst. Do not panic buy anything.  As far as fresh fruits and veggies. They won't keep but so long. I have canned my veggies from my garden and have some no sugar added canned fruit. This is how we will work around that. If you have a freezer, you could buy frozen fruits and veggies.  potatoes will keep awhile as well as onions. But you could use rice instead of potatoes, I canned 10 pounds of potatoes about a month ago. Just buy what you eat and find ways to substitute the fresh stuff like the fruit for canned, etc. They are saying about 30 days but I am looking at these other countries and thinking a good 6 months of food and water. Buy what you can now and just keep adding.  If you usually buy two  cans of corn a week then buy 4 instead of 2. Do that with everything you buy each week for as long as you can. You will build your stock up.  Buy in bulk if you can on things like flour to make bread etc. I have been canning for years and have a good years worth of food. But I started doing it when my kids were trying to get on their feet and on their own. They would come and shop from my food storage. Now they are doing fine and I am well stocked now that they don't need it. But They may end up at my house with their camper before it is said and done. And there goes my stock. She does not stock food.

By some powdered milk and pudding and jello to make for snacks as well as if anyone does get sick with nothing more than the regular flu. they could eat that if nothing else.  Chicken is a good one. Canned or buy and freeze. Chicken broth is something you might want to add as well. Hope this will help. You will get there. It just takes a bit of time.

We're just out of fresh stuff now....so we'll buy what we can eat before it goes bad.  I might end up dehydrating some onions or other things too.  If we hit sales, we might buy a bit more.  If we have room, we'll buy some frozen veggies too.  The fridge down in basement keeps freezing things.  No matter how we adjust the temp.  Basement is only semi-heated and it fouls up the temperature.  We'll get a bunch of eggs tho....now we don't have ducks.  They keep forever ...if the dumb fridge doesn't freeze them.

Wow, Lil'Sister.  You really had a blessing in sales today!!! :amen:   I think we'll go in tomorrow...DH doesn't work the rest of this week.

Yeah, Joyfilled.  I had a PIT in my stomach moment today too.  Right when I realized this was NOT one of my UNreality practice scenarios.  I've done dozens of them over the decades....here on MrsS ...plus I do them personally to keep in practice.  Thinking: WHAT to do next?  WHAT if this or that happens?  .........  Well.....it sure looks like IT IS HAPPENING....now

If we can keep the situation down to a few weeks/couple months, perhaps we won't have to face any real UGLY.....like violence, theft, ...worse.  The longer it goes, the worse folks will get frantic and crazy.  And ....hungry.  Food riots are dangerous.  Don't let folks know you're stocked up.  Hide and camouflage your food and supplies.  This is for real now.     Glad we're off in boonies....dozen acres for most folks here.  But if power goes out, some will migrate elsewhere.  Some tough mountain types will stay.

I'm concerned for my folks....half hour away.   So helpless to help them much.

If people have urinary or bowel issues when ill...a lot cheaper than medical pads.

Thot that might be what you meant.  I think we've got 'chucks' but also beds have plastic mattress covers already.  Can add newspapers for absorbing too.  Also, adult diapers are on my LIST....if that be the case.  Going to stop for the bedside commode that's in storage.

You can't store them other than to freeze or can them yourselves.  We keep the canned fruits and veggies as well as I pressure can (or water bath) a lot of our fruits and veggies.  They're not as nutritious as fresh, but you do what you can with what you can.

You are right about nutritious factor, but in a situation where we cannot get fresh until gardens come in. We will do with can fruits and veggies. Hoping it won't get so bad that we could loose electric and water.  Wishing we were still on the septic tank. Thank you city for forcing us to go with city sewage. We still have the septic tank but the lines have probably collapsed by now. Been a few years. Going back out to stores today. Want to get kitty litter and a few other things.  I have 2 6 gal. buckets with toilet lids on them for emergency situations. That is why I need the kitty litter. Also if we come to a point because of city water that we cannot flush toilets. You can tape plastic garbage bag onto the toilet seat to use then take bag off and tie off and put in trash. Saw that one on a prepper forum a long time ago. Need DH to stay home so I can go get things done but he wants to go and he does need the exercise and to get out a bit to get his strength back. I need to pick up some things to keep us going food wise that I need to go with things I already have. Not much but instead of just going to get it when I need it, it's time to stock those particular things as well.  I have already started my lettuce growing from scraps. Lettuce is doing great. Got 2 heads of it so far. The celery I started 5 days ago and now it is growing. Will be planting that in the pot on dinning room table in about 4 or 5 more days. Going to keep doing things like that for the fresh produce. It is a learning curve I have been trying to do for a while now and I think I am getting the hang of it now. We have 60 of the pads. Should check for a plastic mattress cover just in case. One for both beds as well as for the pillows. I have been ready for hurricanes but this one is different. Heard this morning that doctor said it is already a pandemic and this country needs to say so. But they don't want any panic.

Panicking will get us no where. We just need to step back, look at what we have and make a list. Ask ourselves will this last me a month, 2 months and what do we really need that will not require a lot of water.
