    Polio

One of DH's cousins who is several years older had polio back in the 1950s. His symptoms are coming back now.
  2. Mine is Southern. No surprise there!
  3. You sure had a full year last year! Good to see you back and I hope things are going much better now.
  4. Praying! Are you taking an anti-depressant? There are many lifestyle things you can do to combat depression but it sounds like, right now, you are not able to make yourself do those things. You probably need some help from an anti-depressant, at least for awhile. I come from a long line of depression: great-grandpa, grandma, father and mother, me, then one of my daughters. Serotonin is the thing your brain uses to make you feel happy and un-depressed. Our brains make it but when we are in very stressful situations that are long-term (like your situation with your father), our brains can "run out" and not have enough. Some people, like my grandma, my mom and my DD need to take anti-depressants all the time. I was fortunate that when my stressful situation abated, I was able to get off the meds. There are specific things you can do to increase serotonin levels in your brain such as exercise in sunlight, eating foods with lots of tryptophan, being very regular in your habits i. e. going to bed, getting up, exercising, and eating at the same time every day. Eating an especially nutritious diet such as lots of fresh vegetables, fruits, whole grains, nuts and seeds, drinking at least 64 ozs of pure water every day, etc. BUT..If I were you, I would see a doctor and see if he/she will put you on a mild anti-depressant like Lexapro. This one has the fewest side effect for most people. It can help you while you are dealing with the stress and while you are learning a better lifestyle. Search for Dr. Neil Nedley on google and you will find his website and some youtube videos that are really helpful. Blessings to you.
  5. Pears! Red sweet peppers are next in line or maybe apples. Probably both.
  6. 8 pints of red sweet peppers yesterday. I'm hoping to can some apple slices in apple juice today.
  7. I know what you mean! right now, I'm having a nectarine, and apple and a pear in my hot cereal each morning. I will miss that when they're all gone. Plus I have two more apples at lunch and supper.
  8. My plan was to use them for pies, thickening with arrowroot after opening the can. I never did make a pie with them! We ate them on almond butter toast, waffles, by themselves and even in fruit salads.
  9. I have canned apple slices in apple juice. They're good. It depends on the apple variety. I usually cook a few slices in water just to see how they hold up and if they do, I can them in juice.
  10. It is hard. We've lost several beloved dogs in the past and I have much empathy for you. I hope your heart is healing.
  11. Even after reading the Q & A, I still don't understand it all. I don't know what we're supposed to do and when to do it.
  12. Congratulations!! I second the sunshine.

    Reaction Test

I did it three times and was an armadillo all three!
  14. I got 12/13 but it claimed I didn't answer one question. I guess I hit the wrong button. Otherwise I would have 13/13
  15. I got 18 out of 30. Some things I've never heard of so they must have been before my time
  16. I got 18 plus two bonus ones. I got most of Mt Rider's too.
  17. My goodness, it sounds like she had her head in the sand for sure! It's frustrating, I know. I dealt with this with my dad and his heart disease. He ate what he wanted and rarely moved out of his recliner until he got so weak he couldn't. I loved him dearly but sometimes I just wanted to open his head and pour in the information and the change of attitude. I'm going to buy this doctor's book. I've heard him lecture and he is awesome. http://dryoungberg.com/ My grandmother and both my parents had/have diabetes. Mom is still living. I've been careful all my life, never eating sugary foods, refined foods, etc. I've never been overweight but a few years ago I had a Candida rash that would not go away despite several rounds of antifungal treatment. After Daddy died, I had his blood glucose meter and testing strips so I tested my blood sugar just to see what it was. It was over 200! The doctor said the high blood sugar could exacerbate the Candida or the Candida could be messing with my pancreas or some of both. Stress can also bring on diabetes. I stopped eating bread (and I was only eating homemade whole grain breads) and ate lots of salads with no dressing for supper. I either walked or weeded flower beds for 30 minutes after each meal. I lost 8 pounds, down to 110 and got the blood sugar under control. The Candida rash went away! Now my blood sugar is fine except in the winter when I can't or don't work as hard outside. I can eat more and also more bread, etc. in the summer when I'm working outside several hours a day but have to eat less in the winter. Stress raises it and also smelling petroleum products and other chemicals. I know if DH has been using contact cement or painting, etc. my blood sugar will be higher when I take it. I don't have a diagnosis of diabetes because my fasting blood sugar has always been normal. Dr. Youngberg taught me a lot about diabetes that I have never heard before so I want his book to have all the information right at hand! Wanted to add that my Vitamin D levels were low also. I've been taking GTF Chromium 400 mgs per day and 4000 units of Vitamin D per day. I had a lot of joint and muscle aches and pains and cramping in my feet that went away within two weeks of starting the Vitamin D. My Vit, D level was 32 which is supposedly on the low side of normal but the doctor told me he wanted to see it at least 50. I stopped the D last summer because I'm outside so much and it went down to 23 so I started taking it again.
  18. Bless your heart! That sounds like a full day without adding all the usual day to day stuff!
  19. Are you saying she has lived with diabetes for 35 years without any medication for it or am I misunderstanding this?
  20. I never did get around to trying it out. Now Philbe's comment makes me wonder if I want to! Who is behind it?
