I am crazy- and I am new

I must be.

I actually think that sometime in my lifetime I am going to need to have food storage for a year, and use it! I have nightmares about natural and unnatural disasters. I plan on surviving them all.

So, I just found you all. Nice to meetcha!

I am a disabled Mom of three kids. They are the stars in my life. 9-10-11 years old. I love them dearly.

Right now I am going to school full time. Starts up again in two weeks. Not looking forward to it, and that is a fact. I might get more enthusiastic about it as time gets closer, but I enjoy sleeping in, being with my kids all day and generally being lazy. Thats is the truth.

So, from school I will have a couple thousand extra dollars lying around begging to be used. Out of that, school clothes, for myself and the kids, air conditioner on the car... a hole in the wall fixed and room repainted. I will have 6-800 dollars leftover.

So I asked over in another forum what to do with that money. I want it to go for food storage (freezer) or food storage (Long term food), or 72 hour kits. I am not sure where to put the money. However I would love to be able to get all of it done. Not likely on that little, but it is a start.

I am LDS, so I have access to food stores. Being disabled, I can't garden any more. I had to hire someone to come in every other week and take care of the little we do have. I also have a housekeeper who comes in every other week. Don't ask me how I manage to pay for them, I still haven't figured that out.

For the most part I am a packrat. I have thousands of books (most of them I have read), I have food storage started (enough for a month), which I have had to use over the past few months, so that why I only have a month left. I usually buy things when they are on sale (Like right now, Dollar General has Spaghettios for 1 dollar for a HUGE can. I bought 10 cans and plan on buying more -- yes I know it is crap, but it is crap that the kids and I will actually eat, so it is GOOD crap!). I also bought 2/1 canned vegetables today. Just a few cans, all I could afford really (Until that school money comes in). I long for the days of 4 or even 6 for a dollar canned goods.

So, anyway, I am state certified crazy. SMI that is me. But not dangerous to anything but crickets, and the occasional spider that lands on my desk.

Glad to meet you all, and hope I get at least one of two people commenting to know I didn't waste time writing this and giving myself a hand cramp that won't go away for a couple minutes. LOL!

Seriously, nice to meet ya.

Angela, you've come to the right place.

Wait till westbrook welcomes you...you'll feel as if you two have been cloned...lolol

I'm glad that you're listening to that gut level urging to prepare more. And I'm glad you've come here because there is a wealth of information AND experience (I've never liked reports that were compiled from statistics alone that try to map out how my life should be...I learn more from people who have BEEN THERE myself), that these ladies freely share.

If you have any questions, or if there's anything we can help with, please let us know...

And remember one thing...

*I* am the innocent one.

welcome4 Angela, You're not nuts, the rest of the world is. Or rather, if you are, then so are we and you've come to the right spot. You will get lots of info from Mrs. S but it's going to take you a while, like a lifetime.

There are a lot of us dis-abled preppers here so you'll feel at home. I had no garden this year for one of the few years in my life due to physical inabilities but I'm still working on figuring out how to have one next year again.

Okay, a suggestion. Check out some of Nanapop's posts. Are You Really Ready forum. She's got some great ideas for stocking up on a shoestring budget.

(((((Angela))))) Welcome home. Oh yeah, Darlene is 'de boss so if she SAYS she's innocent, she IS. lol (pssst, she's wonderful, fun, innovative, gutsy, and just made a move from Miami to a farmette in Georgia. Oh and she's nuts too. You should see HER stash of preps!)

I got a chuckle out of your avatar.

To address your question: you state that you have about 1 month's worth of food stored. I would definately work to increase that... but maybe not by just buying stuff. I would suggest - if your disability allows - that you use some of the money to invest in a canner and canning supplies. Home canning is an economical way to not only store food that ain't crap, but also to have 'homemade convenience foods' available on those busy days when you're cramming for mid-terms or finishing a paper, etc. If you're interesting in starting to can, go over to "Preserving the Harvest" and read posts/make posts/ask questions.

Cheap?

Dehydrate food! You can make dehydrators with leftover scraps and use the sun as your heat source to begin with.

I dry forage all year long - from wild berries, plants, old abandoned fruit trees etc. Doesn't cost a penny, just a little time from the rugrats while they are doing the picking.

Many things I dry to a crisp and powder, then add to recipes. It adds a nice flavor and some nutrition.

I am happy that I have found crazy people to hang with.

I just took an inventory of my food stores and surprised myself at what I do have. Amazing what a little each month will add up to.

I have a dehydrator in the garage. A Big one I got at a yard sale years ago. Problem is I can't find inexpensive food to dehydrate! Here in Arizona produce is expensive and fruit? Wow, really expensive.

The grape farm we picked at and made raisins out of years ago is gone, bulldozed to build homes. :-(

Hi ! And welcome from another newbie.

Don't under estimate your storage preps. I was discussing mine with my LDS neighbor & I mentioned that I thought I had about 2 to 3 months supply. When I listed off to him, he said it sounded more like 6 months. I don't discuss what I have with most folks, but my neighbor is like minded.

See I don't mind so much if I underestimate my preps as long as I can rotate them...it is over estimating I wouldn't want to do

I am looking at what I have and I think I have 2-3 months right now. But lacking in a few key areas.

I don't even try to talk to my MOTHER about food storage. She would think I was crazy. (She isn't happy about the fact that I am 'involved in that church'). Forget my neighbors. I am going to be greedy and not tell anyone what I have. Play it cool... and poor. Like I am.

welcome to the board, with a bit of your money i would go to your local cannery run by the church and get the 2 case of 12 cans that they put out as a beginning kit with wheat, rice, quick oats, white flour, wheat flour, macaroni, pinto beans, sugar, pwd milk, etc ask your ward canning specialist she will know if they still carry it and will be able to help you get the items, our ward goes each month and does 2 items from the cannery this month is apple slices and qiuck oats ladt month was wheat and sugar i think
