sick of being sick

Since we moved to our 'new' home I have been sick. It started on the Thursday with a sore throat and generally feeling ghastly, plus lots of coughing. On the Monday I saw the Doc, who gave me a medical certificate for the next 2 days, and said I would just have to rest and use paracetamol. So Thursday I worked, Friday I managed 2 hours before going home. after another weekend resting and coughing I woke Monday morning with no voice. So back to the Doc. he is testing for Whooping cough. now I had whooping cough immunisations as a child and I had whooping cough as a child, so I really didn't think it would be that. But after a little research, there is a very high probability that I have whooping cough. the immunisation and the natural dose of whooping cough only gives immunity for a limited time (they talk of a couple of decades)

question - do you know what whooping cough will sound like in an adult? I didn't and got a surprise to listen to an audio of an adult with whooping cough. If you are isolated and having to care for your family without medical help, do you know what to do for whooping cough? how long is the infectious time? what medication if any is required? how long will the symptoms last? can it re-occur?

I guess I was surprised, and need to do a little planning, as my youngest DD has not been immunised for whooping cough as she had a bad reaction to the first injection. So if the tests say yes, then when she comes home on Wednesday (she has spent last week on a missions trip to a remote aboriginal community) I have to send her away again. Gran may have have a teenager at her place for a few days.

I am hoping the test is negative, but also will appreciate a reason for feeling so rotten.

There was a public service announcement commercial that used to be on tv in the US that had the sounds of a baby with whooping cough. I'm not sure if it included any adults, though. You've gotten me curious now. I will have to look it up!

Here is the commercial that I remember:

Here is a comparison between an adult and a child:

Sorry, I don't know alot about whooping cough but, like you, I had the vaccine as a child. When I turned 65 in January my doctor told me whooping cough is a problem in this country again and suggested "at my age" (whoooo, how I hate that :) ) I should have another immunization. So, yep, I got one.

Hope you get to feeling better soon Sue! :bighug2:

Turns out the adult version of the whooping cough is what my neighbor had, and it went on for over a 100 days before some friend must have visited over night and realized , with the neighbor I have as little to do with as is possible.

He must have gotten treatment finally because he no longer coughs like that. yes it has been going around out here. The official reports are not accurate though, its much more pervasive already than we are led to think.

Guess I will ask for a vaccine update for it. I know the last one had to have been done when I was in the service...... way too long I guess! Might be able to get it Wednesday as I see the doc anyhow.

And yea, the neighbor probably just thought it was from his smoking, but its unlike a smokers cough , that is for sure.

Sorry you aren't feeling well! At first I was thinking it was something in your new home making you ill. Carpets, mold etc. I never even thought about an adult having Whooping Cough. I also assumed once you were vaccinated you were covered.

Guess I need to do some research too. Hope you feel better soon. :bouquet:

I wondered about the house making me sick, I cleaned the venetian blinds in our bedroom and hung curtains to try and keep the room a bit warmer. So rather relieved that it probably isn't the house :)

still very tired and now just waiting for the blood test results.

I have to wait another 24 hours before they will have the test results. I rang work and they said not to come in - another day - totally ran out of sick leave last week and have had another 5 days off since. Oh well at least I am resting. Thank the Lord for budgets, good pantry and being on top of the bills :)

Sorry you are so sick. It is so hard to be ill and have your daughter coming and you can't be around her.

Hope your tests say you can see your DD. :)

A few years we had a neighber who had this problem and she was coughing for several weeks, at least 2 or 3 weeks of it. She did go to the dr. and got medication for it. I can't remember if her children caught it or not.

Hope you get well soon.:bighug2:

another 7 - 8 hours waiting. ... patiently ...

good news - the girls found bridesmaid dresses, DD sewed most of her wedding dress and only has the embellishments and hem to finish and as it is only 1 month to the wedding, I need to think of an outfit :), just need to be well enough to go out in public.

Several months back there were a couple of families here that had tested positive for whooping cough. My son had it over 20 years ago. It didn't last long and his dr. came to the house to check on him.

When DH was diagnosed with cancer we went to speak with his lung specialist because we always respect and ask his opinion. While there he ran some routine tests...we were very surprised when it came back that DH had been exposed to whooping cough and were told that the persistent couch could last for months....GREAT!!! Luckily no one else in the family ever had any problems with it.

Sue, if that legionaires test comes back negative are you left with it being something in the house then? We moved into our remodeled garage a year ago last November and within a few days I was extremely dizzy. I have had that off and on all my life but this came and never went away. Because of my severe allergies we were extremely cautious to use only non allergenic materials and all low VOC materials inside, no formaldehyde in the fiberglass insulation, no carpet only bare cement floors (okay it does have a water soluable seal on it which could cause a problem, and etc. We are left with suspecting a lot of different things, like the aluminum (plastic bubble filled) insulation (which was supposed to be anti-allergenic)that we used inside the WHOLE house to keep the steel siding from condensating onto the fiberglass insulation or just the fact that we live in the chemical path of a 3M factory(But then why just after we moved into the new place?).

I hope you have just a simple cold that is lingering and it will be gone soon and you will be feeling better.

I am definitely feeling better. Still have the lingering cough, but it is no longer spasms and far less productive. I went back to work Friday, had Monday off and back again Tuesday. My general feeling is that I am improving. I have more energy, but still have a way to go. I think I just had a very bad flu :(

I thought house - and have cleaned and looked to see what else could be a problem, but as I feel better, not going to panic in that area.

Thanks for all your concern :bighug2:
