  1. I'm still working on carrots. I got the crinkle cut ones and was surprised that they come out crinkled after they are rehydrated. I should have known they would but I tried them out anyway. Actually I just popped one in my mouth and waited.
  2. I just finished 14 more quarter pints of onions canned in vinegar. I love those little devils but the residual breath is ---------->
  3. Welcome Catwrangla! I'm a throw caution to the wind belly flopper kinda girl too. Glad you joined in. I always get nesty in the fall too. I think a lot of it (for me) has to do with cold snowy winter coming and wanting to stay snuggled inside.
  4. I told my son to run the dehydrator in the spare bedroom because of the smell of the peppers. I'm not sure how the dehydrator will come back to me. That pepper smell might stay in the plastic trays. He said bleach will take the smell out. We'll see. He might have just inherited a pepper drying only dehydrator. It really doesn't matter that much to me though. I have another one just like it. It was a cheapy machine and I'm just glad he is getting into food preps.
  5. Hey AH, just exactly what does stripper music sound like?
  6. I rememder very well the first house we bought. I was scared half to death. We always said if we ever got our own home the first thing we were going to get was a puppy. I was so worried we wouldn't be able to afford to feed one after the house payments. We got brave and got a beagle anyway and she lived 13+ years and was very well fed.
  7. Hi Philbe Glad to have you and Mr. Philbe join in!
  8. That is so funny! Everyday I go to LOL dogs and manage a smile everytime. http://dogs.icanhascheezburger.com/?OnoBetaOptout=true
  9. 14 quarter pints of vinegared onions and one burned thumb. Who knew you could use the jar lifter to put the jars into the hot water as well as take them out! Duh...I do now.
  10. That was really hard to read Wormy. I remember one year the crows snipped off every green bean plant we planted. They didn't even eat the plant. Just snipped it off and left it on the ground. Dirty Birds.
  11. Hi Lumabean WELCOME,WELCOME,WELCOME!
  12. I agree with the others above my post. Except they have said it much better than I could. Ya know C4C, at the end of the day you should be proud of yourself for hanging in there and trying the best you could for as long as you did and for recognizing when to call in the professionals. Sometimes it's hard to do the right thing when it's for the other persons own good. Being a parent myself, I've had to do it many times so I understand. Thanks for the update. I've wondered how things were going.
  13. Yeah but the recipe didn't say how long they had to stay in the freezer before you can use them. And do they have to be refrigerated after you take them out? Edited: fur spelin, seye
  14. I knew the little packets from fast food places (KFC) weren't real honey. I happened to read the label once. But I didn't realize regular jars of honey could be fake honey. I'm going to make a trek down to my basement to read those labels now. Burns me up. I was just wondering the other day if any of my food comes from China. I've learned from all the recalls that just because it has an American company distributing it, it doesn't mean it wasn't manufactured in China or elsewhere.
  15. Thanks for the recipe! I'm tucking it away for future use too.
  16. I loved reading your post. It reminded me of myself. When I hear someone is coming I start start cleaning the house. When time is running out, I start loading up the closets, surely they won't look in there! LOL It's nice when someone comes, who understands I actually live here, and comes to visit me and not my house. Homey and Dee can drop in here any time and roll up their sleeves and start peeling. Come to think about it I'm sure there are a lot of others here too! I love ALL the people here. No really. I do!
  17. Hope she doesn't have Lucy Riccardo type antics! Can't wait to see her baby.
  18. You could put the meals in a zip lock type bag then put them in a mylar bag and put that in a food grade plastic bucket. I think I'm going to do that with some dehydrated meals. A 1-2 gallon size bucket would be handy and store a lot of meals in and light weight too.
  19. She is lovely!!!! You know I want to know her name.
  20. I told my son about the buy off out and he said, "So I have to support the ones who won't work so they can have meat while I bust my a$$ everyday so I can still afford my Ramen Noodles."
  21. How cool is that!!! Thanks for the post. I already have the jar adaptors so a hand pump would be great if the power went off and I couldn't use my Food Saver. I have a lot of dehydrated food that I like to vacuum seal too. Plus free physical therapy to strenghten the ole hand/arm muscles. I'll try Freight Harbor or maybe even an auto supply store like Auto Zone etc. locally next week.
  22. I want to can some stew meat. I'll probably get a roast of some sort and cube it and then can the chunks. Anyone have a recipe for cubes of meat with a sauce added? I'd like it really tender so should it be pressure cooked a little before I can it or will it turn too soft? Maybe pressure canning will take care of the tenderizing? I'm thinking about the dish you get when you order beef tips with mushrooms and onions. It would be nice to open a pint of that stuff and pour over noodles or rice. Maybe I want beef stew without the carrots and potatoes added? I thought I had a better handle on canning after all of these years. But, my situation has changed and I'm canning for myself now and for my own tastes. Read: flying solo and finally enjoying it.
