75 pounds of tomatos, 20 lbs. ground beef, 18 cans of chili beans, 8 onions, 8 bell peppers, unknown anount of chili powder, 38 jars, rings and lids, I'm pooped. The last load for the day is in now. It comes out at 8:00 pm. That makes for a 11 hour day. My back held up real well also. I think when this load come out, I may go to bed.             John

Tomato Day

Well we had a few glitches in our plans today. Wifey didn't get to go with me so I went hunting alone. I went to a place I had got tomatos two years ago and lucked out. They had four boxes of #2's for $10.00 a 25 lb. box. As we were loading them up I asked for a phone number to make sure they would have them available when I'm ready for more. It's a 100 mile round trip, but locally the same box's go for $20.00 and up.   The lady there said, see that guy that just pulled up, he will have mor

Chicken Laughter

Well, like everything in the summer, my chickens are growing. The littles that were so tiny and taking refuge in their 'cage' in the coop are now blended in (integrated?) with the larger 6 birds. They were spending more time out of the enclosure than in. I knew it was time to remove the enclosure when the big girls liked sitting on it and the little girls ran out. It won't be long before the Buff Orp Naomi is going to quickly get bigger than the Spotted Sussex Havalah.   All the girls like t

I thought yesterday was Friday

But I'm glad today is Friday. It's been crazy around here for several weeks. Our little granddaughter (9yrs old) is here visiting all the family. Our house is her base of operation, and currently she is at her other grandmother's home. She'll be back here on Sunday, and will go home the following Saturday. Our DD#2 and her DH and 3 yr old son are in Florida for 2 weeks. Her DH is taking some classes for his new job assignment. DGD decided she would have more fun here with all the grandparents, a

Canning time again

Well, I fizzled out when I got the peaches a few weeks ago. My back couldn't stand the strain of standing and peeling. I ended up giving 3 1/2 boxes away. At least someone got use out of them. Tomorrow wifey and I will go on the great tomato hunt. There is a nearby town that is noted for raising them. A co-worker lives near the town and said that due to the wet spring everyone got them out late and hopefully there should be plenty this weekend.   We need 14 bushels do what we have planned, bu

What is Rest?

What exactly is rest? For the life of a Christ follower it is to have faith, trusting in the work of our Heavenly Father. To stop our own efforts, cease from our own labors and allow Christ to really move in and through our lives.     Our Thursday Ladies group has been studying the book of Hebrews this Summer and the resounding theme for me keeps coming back to entering God’s rest and what that truly means in the lives of believers today. It is so easy to talk of God’s rest, and is especiall

On the Mend

At one point this past weekend I just felt so tired and wanted to sit down, but, couldn't justify it with so much needing to be done. About that time, my second son who is 13 brought his blanket that had some tears in it and asked me if I could mend it.   Well, I'm not much of a seamstress and I can't remember the last time that I sat down and mended anything, but I decided to try. This would give me a good excuse to sit in the recliner with my feet up and my hands busy.   This blanket

Give us this day.... a total surprise.

I am just giving a Praise Report.   God sure does work in miraculous ways.   I was sure yesterday that there were no sales at WalMart or Target for school supplies and even if there were sales, I knew I couldn't afford to buy the things we needed to get the kids ready for school. Even if there were happening.......l I didn't have the money. I had avoided the dreaded ADS!   Yesterday my son and I found an IPOD Touch. Calls to Subway (where we found it -- outside the shop in the road)

So, do Wether's make good milk goats?

I almost giggled out loud, assuming the man was making a funny. But, then I caught the sincere look on his face and caught myself. We were at Aslan's Puppy Training and he was a visitor from another class.   The trainer asked how Aslan was doing with the goats and the man said, "Oh, we really want some goats. What kind do you have?"   Eager to help I said, "Oh we are just getting started, we have two Nubians and two Wethers."   That's when he asked, "So, do Wethers make good milk g

Busy weekend

Good morning, Just a quick note. I finally posted some pictures of our garden. We've been eating the lettuce from it, and the tomatoes are growing though still green, but we are so excited that we have a "zucchini" and a couple of peppers starting to grow. DH is tackling the basement today (started yesterday, after adding a second rainbarrel on to the back rainbarrel), and I'm working on my craft room (trying to organize it). Yesterday, we received an estimate for repair work on the foun

I am so sick of everyone getting sick here!

Ok, so here is my moment to whine...   Back on June 10, my Monkey 3 came down with high fever, sore thrroat--Hand Foot & Mouth disease. Then when she was just well enough to go to VBS, Monkey2 caught the same virus! 3 days later, just as he was going off to the last 2 days of VBS, Monkey 1 came down with HF&M. So I was relieved when it SEEMED that everyone was done getting sick...that was 2 wks ago this coming Saturday...so on Monday June 22, Monkey 3 (my little Plague Vector) came

We made it

The trip was interesting. We left at 7:30 a.m. and arrived just before 5 p.m.We stopped for lunch, and for gas (that ended up taking almost 30 minutes as the pump was so slooooooow! DD#3 was shown how to do DGS's tube feeding, meds and oxygen and did a great job. She babysat while I helped DD#2. On Thursday, I hemmed DSIL's slacks, and then made a pattern and sewed a slipcover for a dining room chair. It still needs to be hemmed, but ran out of time. DD#2 also wants me to do one more slipcover fo

Accessible Storage - My Solution

One of the things that I've struggled with as I've tried to buy bulk foods like grain, dried beans, rice, etc... was that once it was packed away in the opaque white buckets, I couldn't easily 'see' it nor access it.   When I bought the grains for grinding, I ordered the Gamma Lids. These are going to work well.   However, all of these white buckets filled with assorted stuff would kind of run together. Even with my best efforts to keep the Steel Cut Oatmeal separate from the pinto beans

Day to Day, one day at a time

Each day is bringing new challenges.   Today is a stress test for my heart.   Two weeks from now, a thyroid radioactive iodine test.   Tomorrow a tooth filling.   Therapy for the knee -- twice a week. It keeps freezing up and locking in place. Not good when you are walking. Might be on this dang cane for life.   Therapy for the head --once a week.   Asthma keeps me coughing, and the pnuemonia isn't entirely gone.   On the good side, my daughter Katy made Honor roll and wa

On the road again

DD#3 and her DS (2 yr old) and I will be driving to DD#2 this a.m. (Usually a 7 1/2 hour drive, but with the little guy, not sure how long it will take). DH can't go with us as they have a deadline at work. DD#2 closes on their 1st home tomorrow, so we will help as much as we can while there. We drive back Sunday, so DD#3 can start her CNA course on Monday. Yesterday, we did a mattress swap. DD#1 swapped a full mattress set for a twin set (that DD#3 was using). The twin will be used for DD#1'

Day 23

I'm noticing that I "stop by" the grocery store a lot. I used to have a specific day that I shopped (while the kids were in an activity - which they no longer are), but now I tend to go whenever. I need to get back into menu planning. Anyway, here are my recent purchases, a combo of the store and the fruit market: Gallon milk, bananas, roma tomatoes, spinach, a single jalapeno pepper, 5lbs chicken thighs, fresh cilantro, green onions, head lettuce. Total $19.21. I made some pico de gallo

Week 2 Challenge

I think I'm gonna have to change this to posting about the challenges weekly. I'm having a hard time getting in here everyday to post. So, to end up the second week....       Preserve Something: purchased a flat of strawberries...they are hulled (made ds14 do it ) and in the freezer to be used for smoothies this summer. Yum!   Prep Something: Added paper towels to the stash

It's Saturday

I was so relieved to have Vine's quilt done and mailed. Then I had to keep reminding myself that I made it with love, so even with the mistakes, it's ok. Her gracious post upon receiving it was such a blessing for me. I had prayed and sang hymns over it while sewing, so I'm so glad she felt the love and I pray she will feel His peace and comfort from it. (When I read Vine's post re: receiving the quilt to DH, he was in tears.) The design was a new one for me. It was fun to do, and now I want to

Fire in the Neighborhood

The other night as we ate dinner, our daughter called frantically on the cell phone. "Mommy!! is our house on fire? I had to pull over to let fire trucks by and I can see black smoke filling the sky. Are you okay?" "Nothing's wrong here," I assured her.   Just then, I heard fire trucks go by and saw three ambulances follow. We had been about to eat fresh strawberries and whipped cream for dessert but all of us at the table jumped up as one and ran out the front door.   We found indeed t

Italian Dinner

Soak and cook in the usual manner:   2 cups small white (navy) beans in 4 cups water.   Add to the mixture:   1 Tbsp dry minced onion 3 Tbsp Tomato powder 2 cloves garlic, pressed 2 tsp salt 1/2 tsp oregano 1/4 tsp rosemary 1/4 tsp basil   and cook on low for at least an hour or two - until the flavors are well blended.
