Major splurge/prep

So I have been learning to make everything from scratch in the 15 or so months I have been busting my butt learning to prep. I've learned a lot, perhaps even doubling my knowledge of cooking.   I have been using a set of revere knives very similar to this: http://www.builderssquare.com/xp_12073652-...et_FR61107.aspx       So Sunday I bought a super nice set, one that will last me the rest of my life. Here they are.   http://www.cutleryandmore.com/details.asp?SKU=14171       Yes,

Back Home

I just got back from the doctor, and it was not fun. After asking the usual questions he had me lean forward, (I was in a wheelchair) he touched my back and I screamed. He said "that is touchy isn't it." He asked me if I could walk and I said yes. I slowly got up and took two steps and fell to the floor.   The Doctor grabed me and I had to tell him to turn me loose. I have found that when someone tries to help me when I fall, it onlys causes more pain becasue they are pulling on me in a twis

My Grandma DeMoss

Today my Precious Grandma DeMoss is celebrating her 89th birthday!! I so wish that I was there to hold her in my arms and look her in the eyes and try to convey what words could never say...how much she means to me, how much I love her, how much I appreciate her.   Grandma is an amazing person and a Godly woman. The influence that she has had on my life and the lives of so many others is without measure. She was the oldest girl of a very large family and was a Daddy's girl and a devoted da

Silly Valentine's Day Gift

My husband and I aren't big Valentine's Day folks. We might go out to dinner sometime that week and I might get flowers, but nothing too big. You see, as lovely as flowers are and as yummy as chocolates are, I don't refuse them, but I believe they have a time and place. I don't want them just because MOST women get them, I want them to be special…like the pink roses I got over a week ago.   BUT, DH is a romantic. He wants a special day to be special….so…..I really have to fight to get him

A Monday to catch up

Well, I think the stress of the last week caught up with us all yesterday. DH was sick most of the day, I was exhausted, and Monkey1 had a tummy ache all day and whined about it non stop. At least it's Monday, so DH is back on routine, and Monkey1 says the tummy ache is gone. Now I can maybe try to catch up on everything that did not get done.   1. get stamps & mail out an ebay item sold. 2. vacuum Monkey rooms 3. roast coffee 4. put the kids tent away 5. slay the laundry beast

Ouch

I have had back trouble since 1973. I had surgery in 86' which only helped for a year. This week it has been hurting more every day. Well, yesterday it left town. I've had to crawl at times to get through the house. It is better today, but I think it is all of the drugs I am taking for the pain. The wife gave me 4 hours to get better before she would load me up and take me to the hospital.   At least I can walk semi upright without my nose dragging the ground, but it still hurts like heck. Change and More Changes

I was just beginning to wrap my head around the idea of having to move from this house that we've been in for so long...with the possibility of having to move from this town that we've lived in for over 30 years. Then Friday dh comes home and tells me got a notice that his classroom is basically being eliminated at the end of the school year..think California budget issues and the trickle down effect it's having on everyone.   Yesterday I was really surprised at how I was feeling. I mean, I'v

Happy Valentine's Day!

Happy Valentines Day!   Let me tell you about my night last night. The women at our church held a Banquet, for women only, called HeartSong. Having only joined the church last summer I had never attended it before. Being a bit of a hermitress these days, I can honestly say I wasn't really interested. But, my husband insisted, and really insisted, which is not his normal manner.   The purpose of the banquet was two fold. First, all of the men of the church were the servers. The other

Time with my youngest!

My daughter and I created a limerick, actually we created two, but one turned out...well unsuitable for turning in 'officially' so we created another one for turning in. However her teacher read the first one and gave her a grade on the first one -- A+ LOL She said "Eeewwww....good but eewww..."   We started off with my daughter's name (Tya, age 11) and changed it to Mia (You will read WHY)   There once was a girl named Mia   Who lived in the land of Korea   She cooked all the foo

Signature Story

I have a new signature and I wanted to tell you about it. It was a difficult decision for me as I went about looking for the picture that would represent me and who I am.   I am a homesteader-in-training and love my goats and chickens. I homeschool my children and have adopted them all. I love to read and write stories. I could go on and on, just like you could when you try to summarize yourself. But finally, I decided that one particulary scripture was the best representation of me a

A Valentine that lasts forever

A Valentine that will never fade....better than roses, candy or even the finest of chocolate.... God has sent me on a mission. I have some great news for you. God has sent me to restore and release something. And that something is you. I am here to give you back your heart and set you free. I am furious at the Enemy who did this to you, and I will fight against him. Let me comfort you. For, Dear One, I will bestow beauty upon you where you have only known devastatio

Just Another Day On The Farm

It is cold. I ran out of propane a few days ago. I had to change companies that deliver propane and went from a metered system to a call for delivery.   I hate the call for delivery! this means I have to check my tank. I ran out! oops! good thing I have an oil filled heater and a fire place. Today I will get filled.   Lesson learned.. NEVER NEVER call and say "I am out of propane" the lady on the other end of the phone said "that will be another $45 charge for a pressure test"   WHAT???

It was good to go home, it IS good to BE home.

My Dad's funeral was Saturday, and we buried him Monday, in a pretty spot in the cemetery east of his town, near the train tracks. He grew up with a train running behind his home as a boy--though not this train, nor this country. It was good to go home--to see Mom & help her out, to see old friends near & dear, and to tell the funny stories of Dad.   We left there today, and drove the 9hrs back to home, home with a capital H. Home! Our home--empty now without the dogs underfoot. T

Four things in any land must dwell.....

Four things in any land must dwell, If it endures and prospers well. One is manhood true and good; One is noble womanhood; One is child life, clean and bright. And one an altar kept alight.   There is much truth in this favorite quote of mine concerning family life. For a healthy family to endure and prosper well; in my humble opinion, you have to be living in God’s plan. (Proverbs 3: 5-6) You must invest wisely all that God has entrusted to you. A savings account does not accumulate and

Rez Life#2 Dwellings

The structure in the picture is called a Hogan (pronounced ho-gone). This is the traditional dwelling for the Navajo people. A hogan can be constucted of logs, adobe block , modern lumber or stone as this one is. The roof on this old hogan was made of logs and filled in with mud. I can imaging it created quite a mess during the monsoon season. My husband's family lived in this one, probably before my husband was born. By the time he came along, they were living in a 4 room house. He's the younge

Stephanie's Life as a Mommy and a Wife

I think I'll tell you a bit about me. I think I've been assuming that everyone already knows, but maybe you don't.   I live in Alabama with my dh Henry and our seven children whom we have been blessed to make our own through the miracle of adoption. We have been married 26 years! I assure you he is the only man on earth who could live with me that long, he is amazing and the love of my life.   Our children, and how they came to us, are miracles indeed. Just briefly, the are   ds

Shouts in the Dark

Last night at about 11 we heard screams. Sirens. I went to bed, with doors locked and the gun under my pillow.   This morning, my kids reported to me that 'something was happening outside' and the police told them to get back. They told me there was police tape up and they went under it and the police told them to go back the other way (they walk to school via this road). Come to find out, last night two women were stabbed by a man. http://www.azfamily.com/news/local/stories...ing.c823bb.htm

Gardening postponed.

Well it rained on us today so we couldn't start planting. Looks like its going to storm all day tomorrow too. I did let dd plant a pot of common yarrow today since she is so excited. I was afraid she'd have a meltdown if I didn't let her plant "her garden". She's so cute. She is so excited about the garden. She's going to be my big helper this year.

A Back Yard Parable

In May of 2006, I was shown an unforgettable lesson in my own back yard. One that has led me to grasp the redeeming quality of God's hand of rescue and to shepherd grace at all costs; especially towards those that are unlovely and inconvenient. Let mercy reign!   Our Dear Daughter owns chickens as pets. DD has lovingly adored her feathered friends since the age of 3 years old, now owning the oldest hen in the county still going strong at the age of 13 & 1/2! This blue cochin banty hen wil

MrsS is not the place

...to expect to be able to talk news or politics rationally.   I will only use this board for food type prepping information from now on.   Survivalistboards.com is a far better place for news and discussing just what is going on. The people there are far more polite and accepting of other viewpoints. A fair amount of them think about the news and try to figure out what is going on. Heck, even Zombie Squad is a better news and opinion source.   Even a lot of the people posting from the
