TheCG
I fell again. Looking at a rainbow (and the 9-year-old running the wrong direction) and completely missed that there was a step. Now, sprained ankles are nothing in my world. It's a bit cranky, but you wear the major ankle brace that makes your foot hurt if you wear it all day, tighten your boots up, and go. The problem is, I fell on my wrist as well and didn't even realize I'd done something to it for a week. I'm having issues functioning one-handed, so I'm not doing well at not using it. So...how the heck do you perform basic life activities one-handed? Cooking, cleaning, getting groceries, etc. Heck, I have new military boots I need to break in, but I'm not sure I can bees-wax them with one hand, much less lace them up! (This is, at least, my non-dominant wrist. If it was my right, I'd be SOL!) Edited August 27, 2016 by TheCG Quote Link to comment
Midnightmom
You adapt. You improvise. You move on. Quote Link to comment
Jeepers
Oh No! I wouldn't have a clue how to do stuff one-handed. I'd be lost too. Glad it was your non-dominate hand. Little consolation, I know. I'm afraid nothing, except what it would take to keep me alive, would get done. Quote Link to comment
TheCG
You adapt. You improvise. You move on. Oh, I do. That's part of the problem, as I don't feel much pain so I do stupid stuff I shouldn't. We're starting to wonder about a few genetic disorders that involve joints and connective tissue specifically. Mt_Rider
Specifically, make sure the wrist is braced so well that when it AUTOMATICALLY gets too 'helpful' , you won't re-injure it!!! Depending on how flexible you are, you can use your feet to hold onto some things. To put stuff on your boots -- wear them so they hold still while you polish in the beeswax. If you need an extension cuz you can't reach the boots if they're on your feet, put beeswax on something with a foot long handle so your reach is longer. If you're getting to that point, you will need help on the detail work. Use anything you can for a vice grip. Use a rubber pad under a bowl you're trying to stir. But the bowl or pan into a drawer with a towel or rubber pad wrapped around the bowl. Close the drawer on the bowl/grippy pad and lean into the drawer as you stir/mix with the other hand. Use stand mixer for lots of unusual things if you have one....cuz...it hold still. What other adaptions do you need. I went thru about 6 yrs of having one or both shoulders freeze up and the nerve pain was EXTRAORDINARY if I neglected to keep arm fully tucked into body. Did lotsa stuff despite that . I'll take time right now to thank God THAT finally healed! :amen: MtRider ...There's ways and means if you get creative....and stay CAREFUL! Quote Link to comment
Sarah
Tip: If you are looking for a wrist brace, look for one with the metal bar that runs from the palm and up the arm. You will find yourself probing with it, metal first. In my case, it got me out of the 'protect it' mode. Quote Link to comment

You will find yourself probing with it, metal first. In my case, it got me out of the 'protect it' mode. I have 2 good ones, one for sleeping in and one for daytime use. I wear a sock under and over the one I wear during the day. Both have the metal bar in the palm and stiffening in the back. Part of my problem is that I crank them down too tight sometimes - I have to be careful that my fingers don't go numb! Quote Link to comment
Mt_Rider
ESPECIALLY never tighten any brace or wrap too tight for sleeping. By the time the pain wakes you up, major swelling might have occurred. MtRider .....ask me how I know THAT one! Quote Link to comment
TheCG
It occurred to me today that somebody had to have made a one-handed keyboard. Most of them look like they're designed for gaming, but I found one that is literally a remote-sized keyboard on Amazon for $14. Hubby has been complaining that he wants to be able to type on the Xbox anyways... I ordered it, in hopes that it will help me get my work done faster. Quote Link to comment
Cat
No words of wisdom, but I'll offer a hug. Hope you get back to normal soon Quote Link to comment
TheCG
Thanks for all the hugs and such. Insurance kicks in on the 1st, so I may go ahead and have them X-ray it then (and they might as well get the finger that was jammed and still isn't back to normal in there). Quote Link to comment
Momo
My ankle remembers the pain when I fell many moons ago on ice. Not a good feeling, but it will heal! Quote Link to comment
TheCG
My ankle remembers the pain when I fell many moons ago on ice. Not a good feeling, but it will heal! Oh, I've pretty well given up on the ankle ever getting back to where it is completely healed and won't keep spraining. I got it so good the first time, I'm pretty certain it never stood a chance. I kind of wrapped it around a metal plate in the sidewalk while running in the rain...wearing boots. The doctor told me that breaking it would have been easier on me. Quote Link to comment
Mt_Rider
Living in a USUALLY arid environment, I am unaccustomed to revisiting ancient injuries. However.....this past week has been very drippy. Lots of rain. Humidity off the chart. Fog. Mist. Clouds. AND aches in ancient places. Oye! Everyone is feeling "older" than we were a couple weeks ago. MtRider.... love the cooler weather but this replay of old injuries...I could do without that! Quote Link to comment
TheCG
It was achy today, so I went ahead and called to see how much it would be to get it seen and x-rayed. I was told $250 over the phone, $150 for the doctor visit, $100 for xrays, depending on how many were needed. Final bill: $205. Verdict: Not broke, just a really good sprain and possibly tendonitis. Mt_Rider
Ouch on the bill and the wrist. But..not broken. Sprains can be as bothersome while healing too. MtRider Quote Link to comment
TheCG
Ouch on the bill and the wrist. But..not broken. Sprains can be as bothersome while healing too. MtRider The bill is nowhere near as bad as I thought it would be, for some reason I thought it would be $6-700 minimum, which is why I was trying to hold out until the insurance kicks in. He told me ibuprofen, ice packs, and don't do things that hurt. They also gave me a copy of the xray, so if there's still issues in 2 weeks, I'll have it if I go somewhere else. Quote Link to comment
Snowmom
Glad it isn't broken, but, yes, sprains are known to hurt worse than a brake. Hope you are better real soon. Quote Link to comment
Jeepers
Glad you were able to get it tended to and at a decent price too! Quote Link to comment
