Ambergris
A comparison: In the 2017-18 flu year, about 20,000,000 people in the US tested positive. About 800,000 were hospitalized for flu or flu-related complications. About 61,000 died of the flu. In the 2018-19 flu year, about 16,500,000 people in the US tested positive. About 490,560 were hospitalized for it, and about 34,000 died of it. This last number might have been as low as 26,000 or as high as 52,000, but it was probably around 34,000. The current season (Oct 1 to April 4) technically ended three weeks ago, but most states are still reporting positive flu test results, so it looks like we're having an extended flu year. They're expecting to see between 24,000 and 61,000 deaths in the final tally for the 2019-20 flu year, so probably somewhat more than last year. So in about half a flu season, COVID has caused almost the same number of deaths as the 17-18 flu year and way out did the 18-19 flu year. Because the flu doesn't kill six out of ten people who get hospitalized. 1 Link to comment

Mt_Rider
Yeah...that "C" in "hospitalizations" is Colorado. Nearly all is over in Denver and surrounding counties. A bit more going down the Front Range....Colorado Springs and south. Those are the larger cities. Most of the rest of CO is thankfully low counts and very few deaths. MtRider 2 Link to comment

The WE2's
I apologize not...but I told hubby that I'm sick and tired of all the drama on this crap. We'll take the same precautions we take every year during flu season and just add the mask when we're in a store where they're not observing distancing rules etc. Several times when we've been shopping, there have been other shoppers that are totally ignoring any precautions. When we see them without a mask, we stop and wait for them to go on...and I have even turned my back to them! They probably don't care a hoot, but at least I'm letting them know I'm NOT happy with them being that close and not wearing a mask. We are free to make our own choices, and like MtnR said...there are just certain things we're not willing to give up just because other people tell us to. Our freedom is very important, and I think several states are observing that there are those who will resist any and all over reaches. I told a niece..."Watch my dear...when all those millenials start giving us "old folks" a cussing and want us pushed out of sight...that when there's no food in their frig nor their field, and they have no seed nor any idea how to plant a garden...we'll watch the "boomers" (and preppers) take back control of our country". Ambergris
I saw an article today about the aggressive treatment being a factor. States that stuff a ventilator tube down every throat (Hello, New York) have more than half their hospitalized patients dying, while states that "prone" or "pronate" people to help them breathe before they need ventilation are having a lot more people walk out of the hospital. I wonder how accurate this is, and I wonder how true it is. 2 Link to comment

Mt_Rider
https://www.nytimes.com/2020/04/30/well/live/coronavirus-days-5-through-10.html?utm_source=pocket-newtab Interesting article: Data on deciding when you should go in for a potential COVID case. Example...they really want people checked before their oxygen saturation rate drops. NOTE: for those of us in the "nose-bleed section" of the planet, our O2 SAT rate is much lower and would give ER docs a fright! 88-92 is quite normal for us up here at 8,000 - 9,000 ft. We greatly increase our red blood cell count to compensate. For you low land folks.....you'd better NOT be in that range!!! QUOTING: Some medical practices are sending their patients home kits that include pulse oximeters, so check with your doctor about how you might be monitored. Ask friends now if they have a pulse oximeter so you have a plan in place to borrow one for two weeks should you get sick (the device is easily sanitized). If you are still feeling lousy a week into your illness and don’t have a pulse oximeter, you can also check in with an urgent care clinic and ask them to check your oxygen level. If you are concerned, talk to your doctor about whether a visit to an urgent care center or the emergency room is warranted. In the absence of a pulse oximeter, one rough measure of respiratory function is a self-test called the Roth score. It requires the patient to take a breath and try counting to 30. If a patient can’t make it to the number 10 (or seven seconds) without another breath, it’s likely their oxygen level has dropped below 95. If they can’t count to the number 7 (or five seconds), their oxygen score may be below 90 percent. The test is not perfect, nor has it been studied in Covid-19. A University of Oxford team said the Roth score should not be used because it hasn’t been validated and could give false reassurance. Another physical but subtle sign of falling oxygen: Patients may start taking short, fast breaths to compensate, although they may not notice they are doing it. Patients with low oxygen levels might also have a blue tinge to their lips or skin. That’s why a video conference with your doctor can be helpful if you’re not sure about whether you need to go to the hospital. STOP QUOTE: MtRider .....I held my breath to a slow count of 30 fairly easily...despite continued bronchial congestion. Lungs are fine. 2 Link to comment

Mt_Rider
So.....now we're all curious. If this was truly out and sickening folks in US sooner than March, how many of us had it? AND are they immune now....safe to be out and about? Or does the factor of several variations rule that out? If you have antibodies....WHAT does that mean???? This is a fairly complicated answer.... Unfortunately. But this article explains some of it: https://www.foxnews.com/science/can-antibody-tests-tell-if-youre-immune-to-covid-19 MtRider ...I know I'd rather not get the up-the-nose test again. Annarchy
Mt_Rider, DH firmly believes, we got it when we went to TX around Christmas. All the symptoms, kicked us down hard. Our Dr. tested for strep & the regular flu, and gave us amoxicillin, 3 times! We still have the cough. Every time I go out, it is with mask, gloves and my hand sanitizer. I don’t care what people think, I do NOT want to chance getting it. 4 Link to comment
Mother
My grand daughter tested positive for the coronavirus over a month ago. She was able to self isolate at home even though she was pretty sick with it. She works as a nurse in a hospital and isn't allowed to go back to work until she has two consecutive negative tests a week apart. She has had three positive test since then even though she is feeling better. Even if the test she has next week is negative she will still have one more week to go before she can even begin to think of her life getting back to normal. She has not seen her family for Almost two month because of her well grounded fear she would bring it to them. She was told that it was pretty normal for people to test positive and therefor infective for this long after they felt better. How many people who have had the virus but didn't have follow up tests are spreading it for weeks after? Not a lot of good choices for our country. Open the economy and risk a worsening of the virus and the resultant huge number of deaths or keep it closed and risk a total economic crash as has never been seen in the history of the world where people will die by huge numbers due to a total change in life circumstances that very few people, or countries including our own, are prepared for. Stay safe everyone and prepare for more than just food in the pantry. 7 Link to comment

Midnightmom
There is supposed to be an inexpensive use at home cheek swab test that is available. It was designed by a university (?) and is processed through LabCorp. You mail it directly to them but processing can take a couple of weeks (?), probably due to the volume of specimens to be tested. If I remember correctly, the problem with putting people on ventilators has to do with maintaining the correct pressure of the air flow so that you don't "blow out" the capillaries causing irreparable damage to the patient. 2 Link to comment
